The clinic has been inundated with referrals to the extent that we now anticipate a 2-3 month wait time before patients can be seen.
This situation can be helped if staff does not contact CAAD regarding when a patient will be seen and if all contact information is provided at the time of
referral - especially a current phone number for the family and clearly elaborated what the concerns are on the new CAAD Referral Form.
For clarification, CAAD diagnoses and provides medication management for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder
(ASD). Referral for other problems such as learning difficulties, behavioral or psychological disorders should be referred to the appropriate resource as
outlined below.

Types of referrals
The Child Development Clinic (CDC) accepts referrals for the following:
Neurodevelopmental evaluations for ADHD or Autistic Spectrum Disorders (including Aspergers), or processing difficulties, e.g. sensory, visual, auditory, or motor. Dr. Maher, a developmental pediatrician, and Catherine Audrey-Quinn, an occupational therapist, generally do these evaluations.
Medication management/consultation for a child diagnosed with ADHD and not under optimum symptom control. Please specifiy on the MR191 if you want just a consultation with Dr. Hamilton or if she should follow medication management.
* How to refer
Referrals are coordinated by Krista Peterson, MSW, phone 925-370-5490. Complete a MR191 with specific details about your concern (e.g. evaluation, medication management) and fax it to Krista, at 925-370-5277.
Per Screen Saver, starting February 2011, there will be a new referral form underneath the gold star, medical records form, on computer desktops
Referrals that should go to other agencies**
If your concern is:
Speech
If under 3, child should be referred to the Regional Center of the East Bay (complete the two-page Early Start referral form or the family calls 510-618-6195)
If age 3 or over, child should be referred to the local school district
Learning disabilities
School should do IEP (see below under "Process for school district evaluations")
If you suspect attention difficulties, you can refer to CDC for ADHD evaluation
Reading disorder
Refer to the local school district for full evaluation
Suspension/school difficulties
Refer to local school for behavioral assistance

Process for school district evaluations
The family must request a Student StudyTeam meeting (SST) in writing to their district. This meeting is the first step towards an Individual Education Program (IEP).
If the family has had an SST, they can request that their child be evaluated in all areas, e.g. psychoeducational, speech and language evaluation, but it must be requested in writing.
Many families request an IEP, and some districts will honor that, but other districts formalize the process and start with an SST first.

The Care Parent Network, 925-313-0999, has English- and Spanish-speaking parent mentors who can assist families with children with special needs.
Regional Center of East Bay, 510-618-6195, is for birth to age 3. To qualify for Early Start services from RCEB under the category of having a developmental delay: If the child is under 24 months, the delay must be at least 33% in one developmental area. If the child is over 24 months, the delay must be 50% in one developmental area or 33% delay in two areas. The age of child at time of initial referral will be the age for consideration of eligibility. If the child is between 2-3 years of age and doesn't have enough delay, they may be eligible for the new Prevention Program with RCEB. It will be up to RCEB staff to determine what service/program the child will receive based on delay.
RCEB: If over age 3 and there is concern for one of the following five eligibility criteria, contact 510-618-7706. Such a child may have services for life if one of these "Status 2" eligibilities is found before age 18:
Epilepsy/seizure disorder impacting every day life
Cerebral palsy impacting every day life (difficulty with ADLs, etc.)
Autism (Autistic spectrum disorders)
Mental Retardation (MR)
Patient has condition(s) or needs services similar to Mental Retardation
